ELLIPSIS AND COMPRESSION AS STYLISTIC DEVICES OF LEXICAL ECONOMY IN ENGLISH AND UZBEK

This article explores ellipsis and compression as prominent stylistic devices of lexical economy within a comparative framework of the English and Uzbek languages. Driven by the linguistic principle of least effort, both languages employ various syntactic and morphological shortening mechanisms to achieve communicative efficiency. However, their structural typologies-English being primarily analytic and Uzbek being highly agglutinative-significantly influence how these devices operate. Through a qualitative and contrastive analysis of literary texts, colloquial speech, and media discourse, this study examines the structural, semantic, and pragmatic features of elliptical constructions and lexical compression. The findings reveal that while English relies heavily on structural ellipsis and clipping due to its rigid word order, Uzbek frequently utilizes morphological compression, word-inflection omissions, and semantic elliptical structures rooted in contextual clues.
